Disney+ discloses details of its new ad-supported tier

Disney+ has revealed that its cheaper ad-supported tier option will have a lower number of ads than its streaming competitors.

The news comes two months after the brand announced that it would implement advertisement spots in a bid to reduce the subscription costs for its users. Disney+ currently costs UK viewers £7.99 a month.

The streaming service has said that an average of four minutes per hour of advertisements will be displayed. This is significantly less than its streaming competitor, Hulu, which reportedly shows 7.4 ads an hour. HBO Max’s ad rate is also significantly high.

Separately, the brand has also pledged to not include marketing in any content that is specifically for child viewers, including child-made profiles. Political ads and the promotion of alcohol will also be excluded for the ad tier.

In spite of this news, Disney has still not disclosed an official launch date for the ad-supported tier. There are however rumours, that the service will debut in the US in the last three months of 2022, with the rest of the world receiving the subscription plan in 2023.

Streaming giant Netflix has also jumped on the advertising bandwagon, reportedly implementing ads in the winter. There will undoubtedly be comparisons drawn between this and the Disney+ ad-tier.
