Burger King hijacks Christmas icons in whopper of festive campaign

Burger King is launching a new set of OOH adverts, in a campaign that will see it “hijack” two icons of Christmas, Santa Clause and the cult classic song ‘Driving Home For Christmas’.

The adverts, designed by BBH, will pop up around the country, playing on the dual meaning of ‘Whopper’ which can describe Burger King’s signature burger, or an exceptionally big fib – a bit like suggesting there is a genial man in red, fur suit with a herd of reindeer to deliver presents to children…

In addition, the classic song Driving Home For Christmas has been rewritten to help ensure people are guided to Burger King Drive Thru locations across the country’s most travelled motorways in the UK.

The new rendition is cheekily entitled ‘Driving (Thru The) Home (Of The Whopper) for Christmas’, and will launch on YouTube from 25 November, with the song also set to play across local radio stations targeting listeners when they drive by any of the 21 drive through destinations mentioned, with the aim of enticing them to a tasty detour.

BBH’s Felipe Serradourada Guimares said: “Whilst other brands use Christmas to try and win people’s hearts we wanted to have some fun and break them…Merry Christmas”.

Burger King’s Soco Núñez de Cela said: “It’s hard for brands to stand out at Christmas. So instead of trying to out Christmas anyone, we decided to hijack it.”

“We had a lot of fun with arguably the biggest whopper of the season and creating a tune that will be in our heads and hopefully everyone else’s throughout the season”.
