Channel 4 now most popular public broadcaster with young people

Channel 4 has seen its streaming revenues grow by more than a fifth (22%) year-on-year, registering a total of 6.5 billion viewer minutes, according to BARB’s latest data.

The latest numbers also reveal that viewing figures among 16-34 year-olds were up 15% year-on-year to 1.7 billion viewer minutes, with Channel 4 now reaching more young viewers than any other publicly-funded broadcaster.

BARB data shows that a string of new shows in April such as ‘The Underdog: Josh must win’, ‘Stacey Solomon’s Renovation Rescue’, ‘Big Mood’ and ‘Murder Case: the Digital Detectives’ proved to be big hits with streamers.

The promising streaming growth figures will prove encouraging for the broadcaster in its goal to transition into a digital-first platform.

Notably, the data also revealed that the channel registered a 17% year-on-year jump in the proportion of total viewing via streaming among all viewers, alongside a 29% boost year-on-year among 16-34s.

“We are delighted to see the continued growth in streaming of Channel 4 shows, fuelled by our unique blend of returning favourites and noisy new shows”, Channel 4 chief content officer, Ian Katz said.

“As we continue to implement our Fast Forward strategy, viewers can look forward to more of the kind of shows we know they love to stream, from must watch drama and comedy to agenda-setting documentaries, eye-popping reality and some of the biggest hits from overseas.”
