Netflix explores live streaming option with possible unscripted series and stand-up specials

Netflix is considering whether to include live streaming as part of its service, with live unscripted series and stand-up specials a possibility.

According to Deadline, the streaming giant plans to roll out the service, apparently confirming that the feature is in the early stages of development.

The news comes just weeks after the company hinted that the platform may be including advertising material to lower subscription costs. Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers in the last quarter and is actively looking for ways to gain subscribers and compete with the likes of Amazon Prime, Disney Plus and Hulu.

A live streaming feature could offer marketers the opportunity to advertise live and direct to consumers watching at home. The industry is frequently and increasingly making use of social media features like Instagram Live and TikTok to market brands and their products.

Separately, Netflix would be able to use the platform aspect for live voting for talent contests and competition series like Dance 100. The streamer could also decide to bring back its Netflix Is A Joke Festival, featuring comics such as Pete Davidson, Dave Chappelle and Larry David.

Venturing into live sports could also be in the works for Netflix, but nothing as of yet has been mentioned officially by the streamer.

Deadline reports that nevertheless, a small group within Netflix is reportedly in the “preliminary stages of developing the product”.
