Walkers Sandwich Shops open across the UK for latest #crispIN debate

Walkers is partnering with cafes across the nation to open Walkers Sandwich Shops as they form the the latest chapter of the heated #crispIN #crispOUT debate.

The stunt – which will see the shops serving the ultimate #CrispIN sandwich menu – is the latest move from a divisive campaign which has seen two years of debate about whether crisps should be eaten inside a sandwich, or as a separate snack on the side.

The Walkers Sandwich Shops will be opening for one week only, from Monday 12 June, and will feature a unique crisp sandwich menu, with regional variations created by each shop.

The full menu and list of shop locations will be revealed the week before opening, although London-based ‘sandwich guru’ Max Halley – who owns Max’s Sandwich Shop – is expected to be joined by other sandwich experts in Glasgow, Liverpool and Brighton.

As the latest chapter of the snack brand’s #crispIN #crispOUT debate, Walkers is encouraging people to get experimental with their crisp sandwich combinations, with sandwich recipes that include Quavers, Wotsits and Monster Munch.

A Walkers Sandwich Shop highlight from Halley’s London menu is the ‘Mighty Monster Muncher’, a Monster Munch-filled fish finger sandwich, with cabbage, chipotle mayonnaise and Pico De Gallo on home-baked Focaccia.

“It’s very clear to us that people feel very strongly about whether or not the crisps should be eaten in their sandwich or on the side,” said PepsiCo Walkers senior marketing manager, Philippa Pennington, discussing the Walkers Sandwich Shop launch.

“Last year the residents of Sandwich voted ‘Crisp In’ as the winning combination, but this year we’re widening the debate to showcase the wide range of crisp and sandwich combinations – from classic Walkers crisps through to Wotsits and Monster Munch.”

According to the snack brand’s research, 98% of UK adults believe that crisps make sandwiches better, but just over a third (34%) prefer them on the side, versus 27% who prefer to eat their crisps inside their sandwich.
