Marcus Rashford and WHSmith partner for children’s book giveaway

WHSmith and Marcus Rashford have continued their partnership by giving away a copy of the player’s latest book to a child every time his book is bought or pre-ordered.

The ‘You Can Do It: How to Find Your Voice and Make a Difference’ book giveaway sees the book retailer reprise its collaboration with the National Literacy Trust and Macmillan Children’s Books.

The gifted copies will be distributed through National Literacy Trust hubs, where they work to tackle literacy issues in communities at a local level across the UK.

This is the Manchester United player’s second non-fiction book, written with Carl Anka and a follow-up to ‘You are a Champion: How to Be The Best You Can Be’. The new sequel, for children aged 10 plus, is an ‘inspirational guide’ which encourages readers to find their voice to champion causes they care about.

Customers will also be able to donate money to the National Literacy Trust and Macmillan Children’s Books at any WHSmith store across the UK.

“For some, books are a privilege. For others, they are a vital escape. Approximately 400,000 children in the UK have never owned a book.

“Children found in communities like mine who, given the heightened cost of living and the stress that causes within a household, need an escape, and to get lost in imagination. Every child should have the chance to find joy in reading,” Marcus Rashford MBE said.

Rashford’s first book delivered over 30,000 books for disadvantaged children and £40,000 to fund the work of the National Literacy Trust, with a further 1,500 books gifted to school libraries as part of the campaign.

WHSmith head of books Lucy Swinburn added: “Through our fundraising efforts and book donations with our longstanding partner the National Literacy Trust and Macmillan Children’s Books we’ve reached thousands of children already. However, we know that there is still more to be done to bridge the gap in literacy levels between disadvantaged children and their peers.”
