Women make up only 37% of leadership roles in media and communications

According to LinkedIn data, women hold only 37% of senior leadership roles in the media and communications industry.

In spite of these findings, according to the networking platform women actually make up nearly half (48%) of the total workforce in the sector.

Gathered from 830 million LinkedIn members, the ‘aggregated’ and anonymous profile information shows that women in Britain make up only 39% of leadership roles in media and comms.

The nation with highest percentage of women in the sector in leadership roles is Singapore at 44%, closely followed by the US (43%) and also Australia (42%).

India also has 23% of its senior positions made up by women, with Germany and the UAE both sitting at 30%.

The final stats are calculated by taking the total number of women in director, vice-president, C-suite or partner positions, and dividing this by the number of men and women holding these said positions. Other roles considered include marketing specialist, marketing manager, and digital marketing specialist.

Despite these findings, the number of women hired globally for these media and comms positions increased by 5% between 2015 and 2022.

“It’s critical that we work to reverse this imbalance now before the gap widens,” LinkedIn Marketing Solutions senior director, Tom Pepper said.

“In-house and agency teams must embrace flexible working, bolster internal mobility and retention schemes, and offer professional development experiences to ensure women are supported and have the opportunity to thrive.”
