Meta bars political advertisers from using its new generative AI tools

Facebook’s parent firm Meta is set to bar political campaigns and other advertisers with regulated industries from using its new generative AI advertising products.

The news was confirmed by a company spokesperson earlier this week, with the move set to prevent what many lawmakers had warned could be a perfect storm of misinformation.

The moves comes a month after the tech giant announced that it would give advertisers greater access to its AI-powered advertising tools, enabling them to instantly create backgrounds, adjust images and shape ad copy with simple text prompts.

“As we continue to test new Generative AI ads creation tools in Ads Manager, advertisers running campaigns that qualify as ads for Housing, Employment or Credit or Social Issues, Elections, or Politics, or related to Health, Pharmaceuticals or Financial Services aren’t currently permitted to use these Generative AI features,” a Meta spokesperson said, explaining how the tools function.

They added: “We believe this approach will allow us to better understand potential risks and build the right safeguards for the use of Generative AI in ads that relate to potentially sensitive topics in regulated industries.”

Although these tools have so far only been made available to a small number of advertisers, Meta is set to make them much more widely available next year.
