This week saw both John Lewis and Subway take a cheeky marketing dig at Ikea, following the opening of its new store on London’s Oxford Street.
But brand rivalries have long been a part of the industry, from billboard wars to social media banter.
Here, we take a look at some of our favourite, long-standing rivalries.

Burger King vs McDonald’s
It’s the battle of the fast food chains with this entry.
McDonald’s and Burger King have been poking fun at each other for decades.
From releasing ad campaigns targeting their rival, to roasting each other on socials, their rivalry has kept consumers entertained. And often asking what’s next in their bid to outdo one another.

Coca-Cola vs Pepsi
Another set of brands that have been duking it out for decades. Competition between the drink manufacturers in the 1970’s and 80’s became so fierce it was nicknamed the ‘Cola Wars’.
The Coca-Cola bs Pepsi debate asks consumers to pick their favourite cola, and Pepsi adverts often mention that in blind taste tests (that Pepsi has carried out), consumers prefer Pepsi.

Samsung vs Apple
A consumer-led debate, Samsung vs Apple is the ultimate decision when it comes to purchasing a phone. The debate is familiar to many people worldwide, with those on both sides being fiercely defensive of their chosen company.
Samsung users argue their phones have a better camera, battery life and optics, while Apple users argue their phones are well, Apple and therefore better.

Ineos Grenadier vs Land Rover
The last entry on this week’s list is a new grudge match.
Last month, car firm Ineos launched a new campaign, pitting the Grenadier against its established rival Land Rover.
Created by Wonderhood Studios, ‘Us vs Them’ aims to challenge “the increasingly sanitised category norms of SUV’s and 4x4s”, and is fronted by a “provocative” billboard outside a large Jaguar Land Rover dealership in London.
The text reads: “Let’s take this outside”.
Along with social, digital and OOH elements of the campaign, the brand also featured an activation on 8 April, with the muddied Grenadier towing a billboard of the ad through Leamington Spa, the home of Jaguar Land Rover.
Who’s the favourite? Well, we’ll leave that for you to decide.
