Allplants founder calls out World Environment Day ‘plastic pollution’ theme

The founder of plant-based meals brand allplants has written an open letter criticising the chosen theme for this year’s World Environment Day (Monday 5 June).

The theme is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, with social media users being encouraged to use the hashtag #BeatPLasticPollution to highlight their sustainability actions and shine a light on the issue for World Environment Day 2023.

“While it is a noble cause, what we choose to eat holds far more impact to save all of humanity from the climate emergency than all the plastic reduction efforts combined,” wrote allplants boss Jonathan Petrides.

He highlighted the fact that food production is responsible for 26% of global carbon emissions, adding that consumers are faced with different and conflicting messages, adding: “This is why focusing on problems like plastic pollution isn’t productive – instead we should be prioritising action and change on the main drivers to fight climate change.”

Packaging often comes under fire from eco-activists, although many believe the problem is overemphasised in favour of less ‘controversial’ solutions. It is also often an easy target for greenwashing due to lack of clear regulation.

“If we shift our diets towards plants, we can fight climate change like never before,” Petrides said, calling on world leaders to take measures to encourage more plant-based diets.

“This isn’t just about saving the planet; it’s about inspiring a movement and addressing the problems that matter the most; yes, addressing solutions to plastic pollution is hugely important.

“But ultimately eating less meat is one of the best investments individuals and governments can make in the future of our planet today. With so much at stake, it’s time for those in power to take action and really look at what’s on their plate.”
