OpenAI unveils GPT-4, the latest version of ChatGPT

OpenAI has this week released GPT-4,  the latest version of its globally successful artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot series ChatGPT.

Shortly after its release, the US tech lab confirmed that GPT-4 had already been powering Microsoft’s Bing search engine for some time prior to its official launch. The Bill Gates-founded firm has already invested US$10b into OpenAI.

OpenAI added that the fourth iteration of its GPT series will be able to respond to and interact with images by providing recipe suggestions from ingredient photos, alongside writing captions and descriptions.

The hugely popular chatbot has seen phenomenal success since its launch in November last year, and has been used millions of times to produce poems, songs, marketing copy and even computer code. The tool uses natural language processing to mimic human-sounding speech and writing styles, using the entirety of the internet’s information as its database.

According to OpenAI, GPT-4’s updated features will also include ‘more advanced reasoning skills’, enabling it to produce highly-complex calendars for multiple schedules.

Although OpenAI has spent six months developing GPT-4’s safety features, it warned that there may still be some issues with its ability to discern disinformation. The firm added that like its predecessor, the tool was still not 100% reliable and that ‘hallucinations’ may occur – instances where GPT-4 makes reasoning errors or invents facts.

Outside of Microsoft’s Bing, GPT-4 is currently only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who pay US$20 monthly for premium access.
