Twitter will expand the political advertising it permits as app ‘relaxes’ its ad policy

Twitter is set to relax its restrictions on political advertising in the coming weeks as the Elon Musk-owned app looks to review its ads policy.

The relaxation of the three-year-old political ads ban is Elon Musk’s latest effort to pump revenue into the social media app, according to The Independent.

The news comes months after app rival TikTok announced that it would ban political fundraising on its app globally, blocking governments and politicians from using monetisation tools on the platform.

Yesterday evening Twitter Safety tweeted: “We believe that cause-based advertising can facilitate public conversation around important topics. Today, we’re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US. We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks.

“Moving forward, we will align our advertising policy with that of TV and other media outlets. As with all policy changes, we will first ensure that our approach to reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter. We’ll share more details as this work progresses.”

Political advertising on the app accounted for just over £2.4 million ($3 million) of total spending for the 2018 US midterm election.
