Above + Beyond poaches top Wieden + Kennedy creative director

Above + Beyond has snapped up Wieden + Kennedy creative director Joe Bruce to act as its new executive creative director.

The move will see Bruce work with the rest of the agency management team, including managing director Jonny Ray, chief strategy officer Dena Walker and chief production officer Laura Graham.

Bruce will also serve as part of the management team of independent group The Beyond Collective (which includes Yonder Media, Frontier Strategy and Collective Studios and Above + Beyond).

While at Wieden + Kennedy, Bruce has led some of Nike’s most standout work, including multiple Women’s World Cup, Euros and Berlin Marathon campaigns, plus the brand’s first ever global dance platform, and his Cannes Titanium and Grand Prix for his social and influencer work on ‘Nothing Beats a Londoner’.

Before leading Nike, Bruce served as creative director on Wieden + Kennedy’s Camden Town brewery and Formula One accounts.

He has also created campaigns for clients including Sainsbury’s, Bud Light and McDonald’s Canada.

Over the last five years, Bruce has also been course director of The Kennedys, which is an annual five-month course designed to give those who may not have otherwise had an opportunity, a chance to get into advertising.

Prior to joining Wieden + Kennedy, Bruce’s career began at BMB where he worked on brands including Yorkshire Tea and Carling. He was also responsible for helping to launch suicide prevention charity C.A.L.M in London.

After this, he went on to become creative director at agencies including 101 and Crispin Porter + Bogusky London, as well as leading creative for clients including Paddy Power, Britvic, National Art Fund, Turkish Airlines and Milka.

Outside of advertising, Bruce is also co-founder of events, wine and wholesale business Bubble Bros.

“Joe is a world-class creative, creative leader and team player in equal measure, and we can’t wait to work with him to grow Above+Beyond and our client brands, via the power of his creativity and our wider collective capabilities,” said Above + Beyond managing director Jonny Ray.

Speaking about his new role, Bruce added: “This is a fun one. Above+Beyond has proper creative ambition and it has the power of the collective behind it too.”

“Whilst bigger agencies try to catch up and reshape to replicate this model, experienced groups like The Beyond Collective are already years ahead and primed for success. They’re also a lovely bunch of human beings, with huge brains and gentle souls. Which helps,” he continued.
