Post Office reputation suffers as ITV reignites awareness of Horizon scandal

The Post Office’s brand score has dropped from 6.4 to 4.8, according to new YouGov BrandIndex data, as reported by Marketing Week.

It follows the recent ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office, which depicted the story of subpostmasters who suffered in the wake of the Horizon scandal, which saw many falsely charged with stealing due to a fault in the computer system between 1999 and 2015.

Since the drama, there has been renewed anger about the scandal. It is seen as one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in recent years, and politicians have raised the issue — leading to the decision to draw a line under the cases and quash the convictions at once.

The programme is the most watched programme of the year, and is the most popular ITV drama of the past three years.

In September of last year the Post Office selected The Mission Group as its new lead creative agency.

The brand was formerly one of the most trusted brands on the high street but owing to the scandal became the least trusted.

In addition to the damage to its corporate reputation from Horizon, the Post Office has also suffered from the decline of the high street with many branches having closed in recent years.
