Inclusion-led agency Weirdo creates brand refresh for trans+ charity Not A Phase

Inclusion-led creative agency Weirdo – whose clients include Nike, Gymshark and Bumble – has created a New Year brand refresh and website for Not A Phase, a charity that uplifts the lives of trans+ adults across the UK.

Not A Phase’s new identity intends to reflect the charity’s main point of difference – the trans+ community that is central to all its work. An assortment of faces, joyful imagery, typefaces, shapes and colours all aim to celebrate gender diversity.

Weirdo was tasked with the project after the success of a previous collaboration with Not A Phase saw the agency created a Nike-supported trans+ fitness programme called Misfits.

Prior to creating the brand refresh, the agency held conversations with the people at the heart of the trans+ community to listen to their perspective. As a result Weirdo strived to express the sense of joy and appreciation people have for Not A Phase’s events and resources by emphasising the organisation’s function as an information hub, while also remaining faithful to its grassroots nature.

The new website design reportedly took inspiration from ‘the humble cornershop noticeboard’, described by the agency as ‘a community space that grows organically and develops as people seek connection and share information’.

“Throughout the design process our team has been constantly inspired by Not A Phase’s impact: both the support and services offered, and the manner in which their work is carried out with unrelenting joy, fun and love,” Weirdo co-founder and creative director, Louis Persent, said.

“Accordingly, we wanted to make sure there was no distinction between what’s fun and functional, creating a website built to support the organisation as it matures, without forcing it to grow up.”

Not A Phase prides itself on being the only UK charity which focuses solely on the support of trans+ adults.

Not A Phase chief executive and trustee Danielle St James added: “After a very successful rebrand of one of our projects, Misfits, when we made the decision to overhaul the identity of our entire organisation, there was no question in who would be the first call we would make. We are thrilled at the outcome of our new website, branding and identity and are so grateful to the Weirdo team for their fantastic work.”
