Uber offers fully electric option to all London passengers

Uber passengers can now request fully electric vehicles to pick them up anywhere in London as Uber Green expands from Zone 1 to the rest of the capital.

The Uber Green initiative allows the 3.5 million Uber users in London to request an electric vehicle for the same price as an UberX. The service will also see drivers of electric cars receive 15% more per trip.

“Since Uber Green first launched exactly one year ago, Uber has more than tripled the number of EVs [electric vehicles] on the app,” Uber said.

“Over 5,000 EVs are now on Uber in London driving over one million miles per week.”

The service provider plans to have over 10,000 electric cars in the capital by the end of this year and intends to become an “all-electric platform” by 2025.

“We are excited to now offer every rider in London the opportunity to choose electric – helping to tackle climate change and clean up London’s air,” Uber general manager for northern and eastern Europe, Jamie Heywood said.

London is the global leader for the company’s sustainability efforts with more electric vehicles on the road in London than in any other city on the app.

Transport minister Trudy Harrison added, “It’s brilliant to see Uber playing its part in the drive towards a greener, cleaner future.”

“This step comes just a few days after we published our landmark EV Infrastructure Strategy, which showcases what can be achieved when the public and private sector work together on the nationwide switch to EVs.”

More than 90% of new drivers joining Uber this year are adopters of electric vehicles, compared to 12% last year.

Uber added: “Through Uber’s Clean Air Plan, drivers in London have raised over £145 million which they can put towards the cost of switching to an EV.”

“Using these funds drivers can purchase EVs at discounted rates thanks to our partnerships with Nissan, Hyundai and Kia.”

Earlier this month, the firm has also announced a £5 million investment in EV charging points across London, boosting London’s supply of electric vehicle chargers by over 7%.
