WPP ceases operations in Russia in support of Ukraine

Marketing firm WPP has discontinued its operations in Russia, following its invasion of Ukraine, impacting up to 1,400 of its Russian staff.

The move from the advertising agency was announced on the eighth day of the Russian invasion, as it follows in the footsteps of other companies like the retailers John Lewis and Next.

The group stated that it “stands with Ukraine and the international community” and that any ongoing business in Russia would be inconsistent with their “values as a company”.

Although, WPP “deeply regrets” the impact of the verdict on its Russian colleagues, the advertising group thanked them for their commitment to the company and pledged to support them through the withdrawal.

The company also voiced support towards their 200 staff members situated in Ukraine, stating that they have shown “extraordinary resilience and bravery in the face of the horrific attack on their country”.

“We have been inspired by their examples and the outpouring of support from their colleagues in the region and worldwide. We are in constant contact with our leaders in Ukraine to provide financial and other forms of practical assistance for our employees,” WPP said.

The group has also partnered with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to raise an emergency fundraising appeal to aid the Ukrainian people forced to flee their homes in search of safety.
