Oxfam has signed TV presenter and actress Cat Deeley to front its Second Hand September campaign which will see the NGO partner with online marketplace Vinted to spotlight second-hand fashion.

Forming part of London Fashion Week on 12 September, Oxfam’s catwalk event will be one of the opening shows. Featuring pre-loved clothing and with models dressed by second-hand fashion pioneer Bay Garnett, it aims to switching people’s mindset about fast fashion.

Deeley will be featured on a range of posters ahead of the event, sporting different outfits.

Oxfam has also infographics showcasing statistics from recent analysis carried out by Oxfam about the impact of fast fashion.

For example, the NGO found that 93 billion cubic metres are used by the fashion industry annually, which is enough to fill 37 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“I absolutely adore shopping second-hand, so it is such a pleasure for me to be a part of Oxfam’s Second Hand September. Wherever I go in the world, I will always find charity shops and treasure-hunt to find the most gorgeous, preloved pieces,” Deeley said.

“I love that with shopping second-hand, you can find something completely unique, which no one else has, that you can customise and also feel really good about wearing, knowing the money has gone to a good cause and you’re giving those clothes a second chance of life.

“Second-hand absolutely does not mean second best!”

The ‘Style for Change’ show will be directed by Oxfam’s communications lead Kehinde Brown, with a range of outfits sported by celebrities.

“It is clear from these statistics that we are drowning in fashion. Given the world is running short of fresh water due to climate change, the water-intensive cost of clothes production could be vitally reduced if we mixed up our wardrobes with second-hand purchases,” said Oxfam retail director Lorna Fallon.
