Sportswear giant Adidas has pulled an upcoming campaign featuring American model Bella Hadid after concerns were raised by the State of Israel over her Palestinian ancestry.

Hadid, whose father Mohamed Hadid is a prominent Palestinian real estate developer and vocal critic of Israel, was selected to front Adidas’s new SL72 trainer campaign celebrating the 1972 Olympics.

The 1972 Olympics are famously remembered however for the Munich Massacre, in which a Palestinian militant group murdered two Israeli athletes and took a further nine hostage who were subsequently killed in a failed rescue attempt by West German police.

Owing to her own, and her father’s outspoken criticism of the Israeli state, Hadid’s inclusion in the campaign has therefore prompted a furious backlash from sections of the Jewish community.

In a statement given to US news outlet NBC, the German brand has said that it is “revising the remainder of the campaign” following the controversy and has issued a public apology.

For her part, Hadid is said to be considering legal action against Adidas after being dropped, citing the Bavarian firm’s “lack of public accountability” for its own campaign.

In a statement, the American Jewish Committee has said: “For Adidas to pick a vocal anti-Israel model to recall this dark Olympics is either a massive oversight or intentionally inflammatory. Neither is acceptable. We call on Adidas to address this egregious error.”
