Ikea plays the rebel in first-ever global ad

Ikea is telling viewers to most certainly “try this at home” in its new ad that encourages all of us to ‘rebel’, whilst still kitting our homes out entirely with Ikea furniture.

Developed by McCann’s Spanish team, the campaign marks the agency’s first work for the flat-pack furniture specialist since being awarded its global account.

Surprisingly, the ad is Ikea’s first ever unified global creative – due to run across all 31 countries in which its Ingka Group operates. The spot will be initially rolled out in Belgium, Finland and Italy, before appearing in further key markets such as the US, UK, Ireland and Australia.

Ikea has traditionally operated at a local level with considerable success – its UK agency is Mother London.

“This campaign represents another step, supporting our customers with inspiration on how home can enable their passions, where they can begin to push the boundaries in an affordable way,” Ingka Group growth and marketing manager, Licca Li said.

Directed by Filip Nilsson through Smile and Craft Spain, the film uses both life-action and animated visuals to build upon Ikea’s ‘Home Can Do It’ creative platform, which illustrates how enhancing one’s home can drive happiness in the face of a global economic crisis.

Ingka retail manager Tolga Öncü added: “We believe that home is more than just a place to eat and sleep – it’s a place where you can unleash your creativity and have fun.

“That’s why we created ‘Do Try This at Home’, a campaign that shows you how affordable ideas for home can empower you. No matter your style, budget or space, you can find inspiration and tips on how home can be a place that supports your passions. Join us and discover how ‘Home can do it.’”
