Ocean Outdoor UK pledges portion of revenue to sustainability initiatives

Out-of-home specialist Ocean Outdoor UK is looking to do its part in tackling global warming with the roll-out of a wide-ranging sustainability initiative.

Starting January 2024, Ocean Outdoor is set to pledge an as yet undisclosed percentage of its annual revenue to four critical marine based projects rooted in the removal of atmospheric carbon and ecosystem restoration.

The agency’s four chosen projects will focus on coastal carbon removal, plastic removal, turtle protection and coral protection. Ocean already pledges two per cent of its reported revenue in advertising space to charities, non-profits and organisations.

“Ocean believes that companies should strive to understand their emissions and reduce them as far as possible, but we also believe that the out of home sector and the wider advertising industry should not wait until that work is finished before committing money to carbon removal and planet repair,” Ocean Outdoor UK CEO Phil Hall said.

“By reframing the discussion away from compensation led offset schemes and towards a meaningful, science based contribution based strategy, Ocean is seeking a rigorous and long term form of corporate climate activism.”

In a media first, advertisers buying and planning campaigns across Ocean Outdoor’s network will be given the opportunity to vote for their preferred supported project to receive a percentage of their ad spend.

All of the initiatives selected by Ocean Outdoor have been verified by sustainability platform Pinwheel, in order to ensure that the carbon removal and ecosystem restoration schemes fulfil performance standards.

Pinwheel found and CEO, Gavin Sheppard added:  “Our oceans hold the answer to many of our climate and ecological challenges, so it’s great to see Ocean UK stepping up and funding four powerful marine projects in collaboration with their clients. From cutting edge coastal carbon removal to restoring precious coral, Ocean UK’s funding of these projects will have a lasting impact.”
