Sunak ads spark showdown: Alex Salmond takes Alba’s fight door-to-door in bold move to defy Global

The Alba Party has hit back at media firm Global, declaring they will hand-deliver political ads depicting Rishi Sunak as an oil vampire, in the form of leaflets.

The nationalist party blasted the media giant for “blatant censorship”, and has created an official event, inviting members to join them on their mission to deliver the poster through “every door”.

Former first minister Alex Salmond said the flyer, a reimaging of the Scottish Nationalist Party’s infamous Margaret Thatcher advert, would be delivered to households in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

The event currently has 10 ‘RSVPS’.

“Global need to learn that ownership of billboard sites does not give them the right of veto over political messages,” the Alba leader said.

“On the contrary their poster censorship clearly shows that they are not a fit or proper company to be allowed influence over this crucial area of election spending in a democracy.

“They have already interfered with Alba’s potential campaign in the upcoming Rutherglen by-election. If they are allowed to get away with this blatant censorship they could interfere in a General Election by vetoing political content they did not like.

“What would happen for example if they decide to veto a Labour poster in the General Election?”

He added: “Given that Global have banned the people of Rutherglen and Hamilton West from the opportunity to see our poster, we will now beat their ban by delivering it in leaflet form through EVERY door.”

The announcement follows the decision earlier this week that saw Global refuse to showcase the party’s adverts over fears it could be seen as “slanderous”.

In a statement, Global, which owns radio stations including LBC and Heart as well as a huge outdoor advertising division, said: “The only political messages we allow to run are basic messages such as ‘vote for us’, but not when a party is slandering someone.”
