Virgin Media releases stunning CG-animated follow-up to ‘Highland Rider’

Virgin Media has released the latest installment in its ‘To Better and Beyond’ creative platform, which features a star turn from a hang-gliding goat.

Created by London agency VCCP, the campaign is centred around a 60-second hero spot designed to showcase Virgin’s ultrafast broadband proposition, illustrated by the soaring ‘goat glider’.

Set to 80s classic ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ by John Parr, the plucky goat is the latest animal star to front a Virgin campaign, following on from the award-winning ‘Highland Rider’ released in October last year.

With media planning and buying handled by MG OMD, the film was directed by Sam Brown. The stunningly animated CG goat was the result of a collaboration between Virgin, VCCP and Untold Studios – which had previously developed the animations for ‘Highland Rider’.

“Our latest campaign highlights the truly unstoppable spirit of the Virgin Media brand and our ambitions to provide our customers with the very best connectivity to help them reach new heights,” Virgin Media O2 marketing director, Simon Valcarcel said.

“Through our market-leading WiFi Guarantee, we want our customers to truly feel like they can do anything in life – like our hang-gliding goat.”

Aiming to reinforce communications around Virgin’s fastest WiFi Guarantee on the UK market, the creative and its hirsute star will be featured across a number of upcoming brand and trading campaigns.

The integrated campaign will run through to 22 October across TV, broadcaster video-on-demand, social media and retail activations.

VCCP deputy executive creative director, David Masterman, added: “Picking up from where our Highland Cow left off, we wanted to dramatise the unstoppable power of Virgin Media’s broadband with the story of a goat who leaves his stumbling herd behind to take to the skies in a hang glider.”

  • I love the new hang-gliding goat video, set to St. Elmo’s Fire, a 80’s classic background to the ad.
I’m interested in knowing where the background is … is it in the Scottish Highlands ? I initially thought it might be in the Grand Canyon !?
    It’s a FANTASTIC ad. 👍

    • Reminds me of the Asir region in southern Saudi Arabia, just above Yemen. Edge of the African Rift Valley running up the Red Sea. Picnicked on the edge back in the early 80’s.

Actually, they are able to spend a long time in what we think of a perilous position. Remarkable but are seen in many mountainous regions including the Canadian Rockies.

I totally agree. It is nothing short of animal cruelty. I mute it when the advert comes on. As Jaye said, they are scraping the barrel for ideas. Whoever came up with this idea should be sacked and the advert taken off air

    • Reasonably confident that goats don’t worry about dignity. And are extremely adept at mountain climbing. So your worries display the profound ignorance of the urban mentality.

    • As a keeper of goats I can assure you that real goats are up for some fun and would be happy to hang glide. The goats in the video are not really flying. If they had opposing thumbs instead of hooves they would probably be incapable of climbing sheer cliffs and dam walls.

  • Ad in very poor taste: even if the goats are CG animated, Virgin and its advertising company are clearly not animal lovers.

  • Are you people for real? Its meant to be humourous – not real. Get a life. Grow up. Your humour bypass obviously worked.

  • Ad in extremely bad taste considering hang gliders Hamas innocent people at a music festival in Israel

  • The goats on a ledge ad for Virgin media sickens me every time I see it.
I would never consider having anything to do the company after seeing that.
Animals are not on this earth to be used and abused in this way. Yet they are.
Pure capitalism, red in tooth and claw.
    Richard Branson, shame on you.
