Liz Truss resigns: brands and agencies react

Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister after just 45 days in number 10.

The announcement comes after what The Guardian calls the ‘near-complete evaporation’ of her political authority.

Truss has said that she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected as Conservative Party leader and has also notified King Charles III prior to the announcement of her resignation.

While there will be a Tory leadership election completed within the next week, Truss has said that she will remain as prime minister “until a successor has been chosen.”

“I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability. Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills. Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent. And our country has been held back for too long by low economic growth,” she added.

Several brands and agencies have been quick to react to the news on Twitter.

Ryanair, known for its social media quick-wit, has created a one way ticket to ‘anywhere’ for the ex-prime minister.

Paddy Power, the gambling brand that has had several advertisements banned in the past, wrote: “This is really cruel on Liz Truss. She only had 6574 more days until retirement.”

The Daily Star has celebrated the fact that its 60p lettuce, bought around the time of Liz Truss’ appointment as PM, has outlasted the ex-Tory leader’s time in office.

Creative agency Mother London has reacted to the lettuce’s triumphant win also.

Innocent Drinks has also jumped on the lettuce Truss trend stating: “Completely unrelated thought to anything else happening. But how does everyone feel about a lettuce and tofu smoothie?”

Rival discounters Aldi and Lidl have also weighed on the lettuce Liz Truss meme. While Aldi wrote, “What a great day to be a lettuce”, Lidl said, “Lettuce at 58p – a good buy, Liz Truss at Number 10 – a goodbye.”

Gambling forum Footy Accumulators has waged bets on the PM position being filled by Sam Allardyce.

“Prime Minister spot available? It’s time for the 100% man.”
