Ukrainian creatives invited to design Birmingham’s Eurovision bid logo

A select group of Ukrainian creatives have been invited to create Birmingham’s Eurovision bid logo, after the city made it through the first-round shortlist to host the event.

The news comes weeks after it was decided that the UK would host the Eurovision Song Contest after organisers decided that it could not be held in Ukraine due to the ongoing invasion of the country.

Today, the creatives began to develop a bid logo for Birmingham that reflected Ukrainian heritage, culture and music.

Supported by representatives from the community-based organisation Centrala Space, the workshop took place at Birmingham’s Council House.

The city claims to have a strong connection to Ukraine, sharing similarities with the country;s sixth largest city Zaporizhzhia.

“Birmingham has long been home to a proud Ukrainian community and, thanks to our partners at Centrala Space, our bid to host Eurovision 2023 will reflect the city’s Ukrainian culture. This is Ukraine’s Eurovision and if we are chosen to host, Birmingham will do them proud,” Birmingham City Council leader Ian Ward said.

The west-midlands based city has also demonstrated its ability to partner with local arts and creative organisations through its Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games festival and legacy scheme.

Centrala Space gallery assistant Ilona Mandyradzhy added: “Having arrived in Birmingham at the beginning of the year to study, I am proud to live in a city that has been so supportive of me and my fellow Ukraine’s. This is why I am supporting Birmingham’s bid to host this iconic event on our behalf.”
