The Hut Group appoints former ITV CEO as chair

E-commerce retailer The Hut Group (THG), has chosen Charles Allen, Lord Allen of Kensington CBE, to join as an independent non-executive chair.

Formerly the CEO of ITV during its formation in 2004, Allen is a vastly experienced chair with industry expertise in media, retail, gaming, technology, food production and manufacturing.

His past titles include chair of ISS AS, 2 Sisters Food group and EMI Music, CEO of Granada group and chief adviser to the British Home Office.

In addition, he is currently chair of the premium listed FTSE 250 group Balfour Beatty.

The appointment will see THG split the dual roles of executive chair and retailer CEO Matthew Moulding, who is set to continue as CEO and work alongside Allen.

The pair will work together in revitalising THG’s board and strengthening governance and diversity. Allen also intends to review the independent board, develop the management team and refine the group’s overall strategy.

“Charles’s consumer, retail, digital and media expertise, knowledge and skills will help THG to continue to drive profitable and sustainable growth, deliver for all our stakeholders and to meet the highest standards of corporate governance.”

Allen added: “It is a privilege to be joining THG as the board’s chair with a clear mandate to improve governance and transparency.”

“Over several weeks I have had the opportunity to meet the board and senior team, see the operation and understand the finances and business plans.”

“The Group has announced a number of strategic options for 2022 and beyond, I look forward to working with Matthew and the team to review these and I will update on progress over the next six months as the plans take shape.”
