The Vienna Tourist Board is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the city’s Central Cemetery with a whimsical new film that showcases the fleeting nature of life.
Developed by creative agency Jung Von Matt and directed by Blinkink’s Sam Gainsborough, the 60-second spot explores Vienna’s relationship with death and shows off its status as one of the world’s ‘must-visit’ cities.
The beautifully-shot effort blends live-action footage and CGI, immersing the viewer in a mayfly’s single day of life as it explores the vibrant sights and sounds of Vienna, all while carefully navigating its dangers.

“I hope you can see from the finished film, how much fun it was to make! It was incredible seeing all the amazing places Vienna has to offer, all the while thinking about how to tell this funny little story of the Mayfly. We had an incredible time in Vienna, visiting the key locations and coming up with little silly ideas to feed into the film,” Gainsborough said.
“It was fun to think what life would look like for a creature that only lives a day, cramming in everything the world has to offer in such a short space of time. Cakes, spritz, schnitzel, Klimt, the orchestra – it was so much fun cramming all of the Viennese delights into a relentlessly speedy little story.”
Distinctly designed, we are immediately drawn in to the mayfly’s journey – with Gainsborough artfully eliciting no small amount of sympathy from the viewer for the film’s hero during its hectic, 24-hour lifespan.
