Getty Images has partnered with World Rugby to launch a new programme offering aspiring photographers up-close access to one of sport’s biggest competitions.
The initiative sees young photographers working pitch-side at matches, learning their craft under the guidance of Getty’s award-winning sports photography team.
Ten of the 14 participants are women, a deliberate effort to close the gender gap in an industry where female photographers are still underrepresented.
The photography initiative complements World Rugby’s wider Content Creator Programme, launched earlier this year, which has seen young creators working with participating teams across digital and social channels.

The first group captured the Ireland v Japan and South Africa v Brazil matches at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton on 24 August. The second group covered Italy v Brazil and France v South Africa fixtures on 7 September. The most promising students will get the chance to photograph the Women’s Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium on 27 September.
“We’re proud to support the next generation of visual storytellers who will shape the future of sports media and capture the women’s game with the passion and professionalism it deserves,” said Laurence Griffiths, director of sport content at Getty Images.
