A new campaign is calling out the carbon-guzzling travel habits of Premier League football clubs by creating a ‘Black Boot’ award for the worst offenders.
Created alongside Edinburgh and Manchester-based creative agency Leith, the creative shines a spotlights on the Premier League urgent carbon footprint problem, with 80% of clubs talking their journeys by plane, averaging a mere 42 minutes – with the shortest at just 27 minutes.
Initiated by the Campaign for Better Transport, the campaign points out that the vast majority of these journeys are easily accessible by both rail and coach – which emit significantly less levels of carbon emissions.
“Domestic flights are simply bad news for the planet, especially when the same journey could be taken by train or coach,” Campaign for Better Transport head of campaigns, Michael Solomon Williams said.

“Changing the way we travel is one of the most effective things we can do to reduce carbon emissions. Football clubs should be leading the way and playing a bigger role in our fight against climate change.”
Throughout the upcoming season, the worst offenders will be thrown into the limelight on both Black Boot’s X account and their website, with ‘Player of the Season’, ‘Man of the Match’, and ‘Team of the Month’ awards up for grabs.
Leith senior creative, Samuel Muir added: “The majority of clubs’ domestic flights are completely unnecessary. Black Boot aims to highlight their carbon footprint, shame them into taking action and kicking their flight habit.”
