In a rather bizarre turn of events, McVities’ Jaffa Cakes has joined forces with singer Bonnie Tyler to help the British public better understand the science behind a ‘total eclipse’.

With tongue tucked firmly in-cheek, the campaign is apparently inspired by the insight that a staggering 49% of Britons do not understand how a lunar eclipse occurs. Rather shockingly, two-thirds (62%) of Britons were also unaware that there were eight planets in the solar system.

Coming shortly before an impending lunar eclipse this Saturday (28th October), the hero film will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of Tyler’s 1983 smash hit ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’.

“We’re so pleased that McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes can continue to act as a tasty tool for future generations to learn about the workings of the solar system and eclipses in an entertaining way – and who better to team up with than the queen of eclipses herself, Bonnie Tyler. We hope many people will enjoy this lesson and feel they know just a bit more about the night sky,” McVitie’s UK and Ireland CMO, Aslı Özen Turhan said.

With planning and buying handled by MGOMD, the campaign will also pay homage to McVities’ iconic 1999 Jaffa Cakes ad ‘Full Moon, Half Moon, Total Eclipse, which sees a schoolteacher explaining the phenomena with the aid of the chocolaty treat.

Bonnie Tyler added:” Given my connection to eclipse-related matters, I was very happy to collaborate with McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes to educate Britain about the science behind this magnificent lunar phenomenon. I hope that after watching this video, people throughout the UK will gain a deeper understanding of the night sky.”
