Holland & Barrett launches new menopause advice service aimed at BAME women

Health and wellness retailer Holland & Barrett has launched a new campaign to promote its free, multi-language online menopause consultation service.

As part of the service, trained advisers will offer guidance and symptom support in a range languages including Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Punjabi.

The initiative forms part of the retailer’s ongoing commitment to ‘make every menopause matter’, and follows research revealing worrying inequalities in menopause support, with over half of women from BAME backgrounds believing that current advice is too focused on the experiences of white women.

“We have long supported women’s wellness and while a lot of work has taken place to break the taboo surrounding menopause, our customers have told us there’s still much more to do to represent every woman’s experience,” Holland & Barrett director of women’s health, Lina Chan said.

“That’s why we’ve worked with our colleagues, and leading campaigners such as Menopause Mandate and Wellbeing of Women to look at simple ways we can help all women to be heard and supported, both through H&B and out in the communities we serve. We know there is more to do to make the menopause conversation truly inclusive of all experiences, and this is our next step on that journey.”

Close to third (31%) of respondents indicated that the ability to talk to a female healthcare professional from the same ethnic background as them would have a positive impact on their menopause experience.

The campaign will also see Holland & Barrett partner with leading women’s health charity, Wellbeing of Women to launch a new community fund aimed at providing resources to individuals and groups in under-served communities.

Wellbeing of Women CEO, Janet Lindsay added: “We are excited to be working with Holland & Barrett to launch the Women’s Health Community Fund. By providing grants to people from under-served groups, we hope it will give them the resources needed to help improve awareness, education and support on the menopause in their communities.

“There are stark inequalities for women and people when accessing menopause information and care which are generally not designed to meet the particular needs of Black, Asian or other ethnic minority groups, as well as those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities and LGBTQ+. We look forward to collaborating with communities throughout the UK to help ensure no woman or person is left behind when it comes to the menopause.”
