Show Racism the Red Card partners with McCann to release ‘Fabric of England’ shirt

Educational charity Show Racism the Red Card is celebrating the rich diversity of the recently-announced England World Cup squad by releasing a new ‘Fabric of England’ shirt.

Responding to the racist abuse faced by several black players following England’s final exit at the Euros last year, Show Racism the Red Card has collaborated with creative agency McCann London to create a special edition England shirt that celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of the England football team.

It is hoped that the initiative will kick-start important conversations around the important role migration has played in creating the modern Britain we know today.

“This is an important project to celebrate what makes England, England,” Show Racism the Red Card deputy chief executive, Paul Kearns said.

“The shirt spreads a positive message of diversity and inclusion and opens people’s eyes to the rich heritage of the England squad. We hope it inspires the whole country to get behind England to bring it home.”

Reflecting the personal ‘migration stories’ of the 39 players who helped qualify for Qatar, the shirt has been designed to resemble a ‘patchwork quilt’ of nations, with over a dozen flags of current and former Commonwealth nations included.

McCann UK chief creative officers, Rob Doubal and Laurence Thomson added: “Launching the unOfficial England shirt in collaboration with Show Racism the Red Card, is a proud moment for us – we’ve been working on this project since the Euros final last year, when some of the squad were subject to totally unjust and abhorrent racist abuse. We hope this idea positively highlights the intersection of national identity, culture and football at large.”
