Ant and Dec help fight scammers in latest Santander TV spot

Spanish banking group Santander has unveiled the latest instalment in its playful ‘Bank of Antandec’ series, but this time with a serious, anti-scammer awareness message.

Returning in their fictional roles as the CEOs of the ‘Bank of Antandec’, the iconic TV personalities help the public to detect scams before falling victim to them through the use of ‘Fraud Detecting Scammer Pants’ which inflate whenever the wearer receives a scam text.

Created by London agency House 337, ‘Stop! Scammer Time!’ sees the famous duo perform a humorous rendition of MC’s Hammer’s ‘U Can’t Touch This’, replacing the catch phrase ‘Hammer Time’ with ‘Scammer Time’.

The 60-second hero spot is set to premiere tomorrow (15 October) with additional assets rolled out across across video on demand, radio, social media and in-branch activity.

A specially-created TikTok campaign featuring Ant and Dec and five influencers using a ‘scammer pants’ filter will launch next week.

Despite the shenanigans on display, the campaign supports a more serious anti-fraud message, backing Take Five – an organisation that straightforward, impartial advice to help tackle banking fraud.

“If we can get people to hear the words ‘Scammer time’ and pause when they’re about to part with money or personal details – then hopefully we can help thwart more of these criminals,” Santander UK director of marketing, Dan Sherwood said.

“We know how ruthless scammers are and the impact they have. With the amount of people falling victim to scams going up, we’re determined to do what we can to protect people and hope that approaching the topic from a different angle – with the light-hearted nature of the Bank of Antandec – will help it stick in people’s minds.”

House 337 executive creative director, Jo Moore added: “Fraud and scams are serious stuff, but using the Bank of Antandec as a vehicle, this allows us to deliberately show an entertaining and light-hearted approach from those two cheeky CEOs, which engages consumers, who then get the important, sensible message from Santander. The overall takeout being ‘Stop and think’”.

  • Genuinely hate this advert. Santander didn’t stop, intervene or provide any help or reassurance towards my mother when she was scammed. This advert is literally showing it’s a joke to them. We are in the process of leaving the bank now due to this advert. Hurtful and tone deaf to anyone that’s been a victim of crime. Good job whoever pitched and approved this.

  • Banking scams cause untold damage and misery, even suicides. Santander had an opportunity to use their adverts to provide valuable education to help people avoid these scams, yet they treat it as a joke with those 2 “celebrities” prancing about in those stupid pants.
