Wiggle and Adidas Terrex partner with Muslim Hikers to make the outdoors more accessible this Ramadan

Adidas’ Terrex range has partnered with global sports retailer Wiggle and Muslim Hikers to help tackle what many believe to be a lack of diversity and inclusivity in the great outdoors.

By creating a range of prayer mats designed specifically for outside use and by installing signs pointing to Mecca alongside popular UK hiking routes, it is hoped that greater numbers of Muslims will be encouraged to take up hiking and outdoor activities.

The campaign was launched in response to the horrific abuse suffered by the group following its appearance on a BBC Countryfile episode in September last year – including accusations that they are not ‘proper walkers’.

“Working with Wiggle and adidas TERREX has allowed us to take a huge step in the right direction when it comes to promoting inclusivity in the outdoors,” Muslim Hikers founder, Haroon Mota said.

“Everyone should feel empowered to get outside and enjoy nature, and the prayer mats and signs have made it easier for us within the Muslim community to do this without having to worry about the practicalities of prayer.”

Wiggle has already donated 100 mats to Muslim Hikers and will begin selling them from next month for £20 each, with all proceeds going to selected charity partners.

Wiggle CEO, Huw Crwys-Williams added: “At Wiggle, we are committed to making exercise a welcome and inclusive environment for all. We were disappointed to hear reports of abuse that the Muslim Hikers received and back the group’s goal of bringing the community together through hiking.

“By partnering with the Muslim Hikers and Adidas Terrex, we aim to bring awareness to the fact that any form of exercise is for everyone and will strive to improve accessibility for all communities.”
